Dad was diagnosed with dementia

The first steps after a dementia diagnosis, including legal papers, safety, and support for the family.

Last reviewed November 6, 2026

A dementia diagnosis changes a lot, but you don’t have to figure it all out this week. These steps put the most time-sensitive things first.

  1. Learn what kind of dementia it is

Ask the doctor which type it is, what stage, and what to expect next. Write down the answers or bring someone to take notes.

  2. Sign legal papers while he still can

A durable power of attorney and a patient advocate designation should be done soon, while he can still understand them. An elder-law attorney can help.

  3. Talk about driving

Dementia affects judgment and reaction time. Ask the doctor for a driving evaluation, and have a ride plan ready.

  4. Make a plan for money

Find his bank accounts, bills, and insurance. Set up automatic bill pay and watch for scams. If long-term care may be needed, ask an attorney about Medicaid planning early.

  5. Get support for yourself

Call the Alzheimer's Association helpline at 1-800-272-3900, any time, day or night. Ask about local caregiver classes and support groups.

  6. Plan for more care over time

Dementia usually gets worse over time. Learn about adult day programs, in-home help, and memory care now, before you need them.
