Medicare

When to sign up, what each part covers, and where to get free, unbiased help in Michigan.

Last reviewed November 6, 2026

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older and for some younger people with disabilities. The rules are the same in every state, but Michigan has its own free counseling program, MMAP.

When to sign up

  • Initial enrollment: a 7-month window that starts 3 months before the month someone turns 65 and ends 3 months after it.
  • Working past 65: people covered by a current employer’s health plan can usually wait, then sign up within 8 months after that coverage ends.
  • Missed it? The general enrollment period runs January 1 to March 31 each year. Late sign-ups can mean a lifelong penalty, so don’t wait.

What each part covers

Part Covers
A Hospital stays, short rehab stays in a skilled nursing facility, hospice
B Doctor visits, outpatient care, tests, medical equipment
C (Medicare Advantage) A private plan that replaces A and B, often with drug coverage built in
D Prescription drugs

Medigap or Medicare Advantage?

This is the biggest choice. Medigap (Medicare Supplement) works with Original Medicare and lets your parent see any doctor who takes Medicare, but it has a monthly premium. Medicare Advantage often has a low premium but uses a network of doctors and needs approval for some care.

The best time to buy Medigap is the 6 months after someone is 65 and enrolled in Part B. After that, insurers can ask health questions and may turn them down.

Free help in Michigan

MMAP counselors are trained volunteers who don’t sell anything. They can compare plans, check drug costs, and help with appeals. Call 1-800-803-7174 to reach the nearest office.

If you’d rather work with a licensed insurance broker, ask how they’re paid and which companies they represent. Silver Mitten does not sell Medicare plans.
