Help choosing senior living
Free placement advisors can save you time. Here's how they work, how they're paid, and how to check any place yourself.
How placement advisors work
A placement advisor learns what your parent needs and what you can spend, then suggests assisted living or memory care communities and sets up tours. Families don't pay. The community pays the advisor a fee when your parent moves in.
Silver Mitten may partner with a placement service and be paid when a family we refer moves in. That fee never changes what you pay. You can always search on your own instead.
Check any place on your own
- Ask which Michigan license it holds: Home for the Aged or Adult Foster Care. Then look it up with Michigan LARA (other website).
- For nursing homes, compare inspection results on Medicare Care Compare (other website).
- Visit twice, once at a mealtime and once in the evening.
- Ask for the full price list in writing, including care levels and what makes the price go up.
