You can do a lot from far away with the right people and paperwork in place. The first step is a single phone call.
The parent info binder keeps everything in one place for you and the local team.
Call the local Area Agency on Aging
They know what's available near your parent and can often do a needs assessment. It's the best first call you can make from far away.
Build a local team
Make a list of neighbors, friends, church members, and nearby relatives who can check in. Share phone numbers with each other.
Get permission to talk to doctors and banks
Ask your parent to sign HIPAA release forms at each doctor's office, and a power of attorney for money. Without them, offices may not talk to you.
Gather the important information
Fill out a parent info binder with doctors, medications, insurance, and account details. Keep a copy yourself.
Make every visit count
Check the fridge, the mail, the medicine cabinet, and the car. Look for unpaid bills, bruises, or weight loss.
Consider a care manager
A geriatric care manager is a paid professional, often a nurse or social worker, who can be your eyes and ears locally.
