Money questions come up fast when a parent needs more help. Start with the benefits they may already be missing.

Social Security

Most older adults get retirement benefits. A widow or widower may qualify for survivor benefits, which can be higher than their own. Check details at ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213.

If you need to manage a parent’s benefits, ask Social Security to make you a representative payee. A power of attorney does not cover Social Security payments.

SSI

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a monthly payment for people 65 and older, blind, or disabled who have very little income and savings. SSI usually comes with Medicaid in Michigan.

VA Aid and Attendance

Veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily tasks may get extra monthly money on top of a VA pension. Ask a county Veterans Service Officer to help with the application. They don’t charge for this.

Michigan tax credits

  • Homestead Property Tax Credit: for homeowners and renters with lower incomes. File form MI-1040CR, even if your parent doesn’t owe income tax.
  • Home Heating Credit: helps pay heating costs for lower-income households.

Help with utility bills

The Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) works through local agencies to help with heating and electric bills. Dial 2-1-1 to find the right agency near your parent.

Watch for scams

Older adults are frequent targets of phone, email, and “grandchild in trouble” scams. Set up alerts on bank accounts and talk with your parent about never giving out Social Security or bank numbers on a call they didn’t make.

Common questions

Can I manage my parent's Social Security checks?

Yes, if Social Security names you as a representative payee. A power of attorney alone is not enough for Social Security. Contact SSA to apply.

Does my parent have to own a home to get the Michigan property tax credit?

No. Renters can also qualify for the Homestead Property Tax Credit. Seniors may get a larger credit.
